Coffee is a bad idea...
So....as a cheat treat for doing such a good job at work, I decided to get a hazelnut coffee from dunkin' donuts: one cream, 2 sugars.
Mmm-mmm. Can't wait! I'm drinking it. It's delicious. It's been too long.
2 o' clock rolls round and I'm going to die.
I'm feeling faint. I want to either throw up or eat as much food as possible to stop from passing out. I eat a salad at Cosi's and then feel like I'm going to explode. The amount of gas from the milk in the coffee, caused me to feel like a hot pimple.
I feel sad for two reasons: One, that I'll need a grace period to enjoy coffee again, and two, I will never feel better from this ache in my stomach.
Coffee was a terrible cheat meal.

Day 10 and holding on...barely.
I thought by day 10 I would be used to this style of eating and finally be getting the hang of it. And though I've gotten into the groove, it seems like every day in week 2 has just gotten harder and harder. I'm so tired of uncooked raw vegetable I can't even tell you! Luckily I'm still a big fan of fruit so I have something to eat...but man...I have no idea how people eat this way forever. I just love pizza too much to ever give it up entirely. I have decided to give up hard liquor though. (Minus a few Mojitos every now and again.) I think sticking to wine and sake is a great plan and one I can actually do.
Just a few more days left! I'm trying to stay positive though, I wouldn't be surprised if I was found kicking random people in the shins by the time the week is through...

Week One Review: or I'm So Hungry I Want To Die, Cause I Can't Have No Chocolate Pie
So here's a small questionnaire regarding our status after one week of eating raw.
Question 1: Are you enjoying the raw food diet?
Here's to week 2!
Question 1: Are you enjoying the raw food diet?
- K- I think 'enjoy' would be the wrong choice of word. It's been very tricky, and I've realized that i don't really like raw vegetables in great quantities. But I feel good that I've been eating really healthy foods.
- R- I'm having an okay time with it. I don't think I could do a whole 2 years of this, but I definitely like the challenge and the benefits are fairly present
- K- This week I haven't had any belly aches from eating terrible food. And i've lost 7 1/2 lbs. Not too shabby.
- R- I sleep much better and I like how little cleaning you have to do for eating. ie. salads and nuts
- K- besides feeling like 'i can't eat anything at all', it's been really tricky to grocery shop and to find good recipes. So i probably haven't been eating enough food, in general, which has left me feeling on the 'weak' side for most of the past 7 days
- R- Social occasions are tough, not only because you can't eat the food, but then you have to charmingly explain why you have a plate of fruit instead of a delicious porkchop that you're friend slaved away at to make. The appearence is that you're being rude if you don't eat it, when in reality, you're on this eating lifestyle
- K- Yes, hands down. I have a lot of social gatherings that are going to be tough.
- R- Not really, i'm used to this way of eating by now, so it's really just a matter of keeping stock of food items. I find I'm buying more groceries because I'm eating more often.
Here's to week 2!

Cheers to summer!

Well, holy Leonardo DeCaprio!I just found out that you can drink sake while eating Raw. And I love sake terribly, so this is quite exciting. Here's a great recipe I found from the book (I just checked out at my local librair) called LIVING RAW FOOD by Sarma Melngailis.
Raspberry Sunset
Serves 4
1 half pint red raspberries, slightly crushed
1/2 cup yuzu juice (If you can't find yuzu juice, just add a bit more lemon and lime)
1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
1/4 cup freshly squeezed lime juice
1/3 cup agave nectar
1 1/2 cup sake
3/4 cup sparkling wine
Mint sprigs for garnish (optional)
Divide the crushed berries among four tall glasses and fill to the rim with ice.
Combine the yuzu juice, lemon juice, lime juice, agave, and sake in a pitcher or bowl and mix well. Pour the liquid over the ice and berries.
Top off each glass with the sparkling white wine, and garnish with mint sprigs.
Now does that sound good or what?
P.S. I am on Day 6 of eating Raw and so far so good. I have not caved yet. Have I wanted to pull my hair out? Yes. Have I wanted to punch people in the face who are eating pizza? Yes. But I'm hanging in there. Its a tricky diet at first because you feel like you can't eat anything besides nuts fruit and veggies...which is true, but I'm still working on the "mixing all those ingredients up so they taste great" part. One day at a time. Maybe that Raspberry Sunset will give me some inspiration!

Deadly Vegetables
I'm come to the conclusion that a raw food diet consists mainly of salad and nuts. There's the occasional snack bar, a raw food cookie, etc. but in general its just two things: salads...and nuts.
1 apple

This is not something to scoff at per-say, but it does leave one with few options. 'Shall I try spinach, or kale today?' 'Apple or Orange?' You can't eat everything, but you can eat as much of fruit and vegetables as you like, or can. I'm craving a bigger meal, which is why I made this...
This is my hearty meal:
3 celery
2 grated carrots
Huge dollop of Hommous
1/2 grated zuchinni
All in all, a delicious and hearty snack. However, the mandolin blade used to cut the vegetable resulted in this...
So there has been a second conclusion made and it is this: Vegetables are conniving, and regardless of their impediments will do anything in their appendage-less means to destroy you.
Oh and raw food makes you go to the bathroom waaaay too much.

Good Bye Baby Jeep, Hello Day 3 of Eating Raw

I'm sending baby jeep off to her new home today (in Indiana!) and I am a bit on the sad side, which has kind of killed my appetite. Though, that's probably a good thing because yesterday was not an easy day in the eating raw arena. I went to Whole Foods for lunch and I kept walking around thinking, I CAN'T EAT ANY OF THIS! It was rather frustrating. And I didn't have time to make any fun recipes and someone (ahem) has my blender so I couldn't make any fancy, delicious smoothies.
I think if someone is going to start eating Vegan, they should go Raw first for a few weeks, because these past few days, I've often thought, "Oh if only I were Vegan! I could eat so much more!!"
Think I'm going to splurge the $14 tonight and get some ceviche from Taste of Peru. Now THAT I know, is one delicious Raw meal. And when you part with your baby jeep that you've had for 15 years, one deserves a delicious meal.

Saving Grace
The Raw Revolution bar tasted a bit like a Nutri-Grain, which was a relief. Regardless of its green, soft, turd-like exterior, the bar tasted really good, and it was perfect for on the go snacking since I commute a lot.
I just have to make sure I don't actually eat green turds because these two look so similar. I might confuse the two and wind up getting botulism.

Day 1 of Eating Raw: Check

In my book, there are many things that deserve a big FAIL: mini back packs, Pepsi Clear, Garth Brooks' alter ego Chris Gaines. Today I'm adding a new one to that list: the raw version of "Chili Cheese Fries." Dear Lord, what a let down! What a weird and disappointing let down. The recipe called for jicama (semi-sweet root vegetable) to be cut up like french fries and then tossed with some olive oil, chili powder and "cheese tasting" nutritional yeast. Now...I knew they weren't going to taste like real fries. I knew that. But they sure left out the part about them tasting like salty, chili flavored, apples.
Bad job, raw recipe givers!
I did try the "Almost Tuna Salad" from Whole Foods today and a Raw Revolution Bar (Coconut Agave) and those both get a double thumbs up from me.
As for tomorrow: here's to finding better recipes and to never looking at that picture of Garth Brooks again.
